as some of you know, i’m in the process of watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer the TV series for the very first time.

Up until recently i had never felt more than a fleeting impulse to watch the show. Sure, i love vampires – what healthy, red blooded, american girl doesn’t. i went through the usual goth period of girls my age. And more that half my clothes are black. And i had watched the movie, and unlike so many people, i liked it.
mostly for the “You threw a knife at my head.” “But you caught it.” “You threw a knife at my head.” and for the backflips. because backflips are sexy. Given all this, one would think i’d have been eager to watch the show. But instead I was certain that is would be every bit as watch able as the American La Femme Nakita series, and so took against the show and had watched, before this week, part of two episodes.

I’m a big snob. I love television. But only good television. So i spend a lot of time nodding and smiling, when people are talking about shows i don’t watch, (like Lost, which may be good now, i don’t know, but it was utter crap when it first started) or fleeing from the room, when they talk about shows i despise, (like Survivor,) well i’ve nodded and smiled about Buffy for years. But somehow the show, and it’s creator Whedon, reached a critical mass. They are so hugely popular, so thoroughly a part of contemporary culture, that everyone on Earth assumes i’ve seen them. And i’m inclined to believe that they are right to do so. Any thing that much a of alt culture -- geek, whatever – is something i should have at least a passing familiarity with. People talk about Buffy and Firefly and Whedon’s work in general in the same way that once upon a time people talked about Star Trek or Anne Rice. Twice at Dragon*Con i was unable to hold a conversation with someone because not only do i not read Xmen and all that, but i failed to respond to the lowest common denominator, the most accessible topic possible: Joss Whedon. And even “hip” people (read non-geek, non-gamer people) assume i’ve seen Buffy, at least.

So i’m watching Buffy. And i’ll be posting my take on it for the enjoyment of the maybe three of you who might be interested.

Season One:
First comment, Williow is much sexier than Buffy.
Second comment, Where are the floppy haired boys?
Third comment, Is it wrong to think Giles is the sexiest guy on the show so far?
Fourth comment, Xander is a big goob.

reason 57 to get an iphone. when zombies attack you won't have to run ethernet cable to your laptop on the roof. laptop and cables in one hand, crowbar in the other: so distracting.

i hate the rain. with hate. but not as much as i hate the cold. bleh.
joey is off to alabama tomorrow with andrew to pick up andrew's new car. he'll be back sunday, just in time for m and l to head off for nashville.

as part of my new year's resolutions i'm trying to write ten plot ideas a day, which is hard for me, thus the resolution to practice.

some of the probate stuff is settling out, finally. maybe by the end of this year i'll be through with it all.

no work for me for a while, evidently. we are into the end of the fiscal year, when everyone takes thier time off. so you might think that would mean more work for me. but since most of the folks taking their vacations are full timers there is no additional money to fill thier slots. oh well.

i'm catching up on tv and movies, reading the Miles Bujold series, and trying not to run mad with too much time on my hands. all in all not a bad life.

Finished with a day to spare. Of course, my book has very little middle. But it does have a beginning and an end.

it is now 4:30 on the eastern seaboard. temper_day and i have stayed up past the folk at the nytimes. and yet the good people of Virginia are still not done counting these fucking ballots. Their polls closed at 7. That was nine and a half hours ago.
One of the three districts still not fully reported is the Isle of Wight. It's one of our nation's oldest county governments, and it has, as of the year 2000 census, about 30,000 people living in it.

Not only could I, personally, have asked every one of those men, women, and children which candidate they wanted for their senator, by now, but I could have done it had I had to drive there from Memphis.

I hate election night. With hate. Brain melt. Hate. Hate.

That is all.

A Chinese Girl's Diary Builds a Bridge Out of Rural Poverty

Published: March 24, 2004

this girl is like a rigoberta menchu. or opal. but, like anne frank, without the veracity doubts, which have haunted the other two.

what if you want to pay for poor kids to go to school. feeding the hungry is all very well, but giving them to tools the learn about the world seems to me just as important.

i can't imagine my life without food, but i also can't imagine it without books. without access to news or knowledge from outside my immediate environment.

emailed the article to LeR, maybe he'll know of some.

why is it that the government can find you if you don't pay your taxes, but can't manage to send the forms i need to pay them.

it's bad enough that every time i turn on the news i shudder to see my tax dollars at work -- an armless kid i helped pay to bomb, a single mom being told that what she needs a husband, not a living wage. not enough tax dollars left these days to pay for the NEA/NEH, or for schools, or even for veterans' benefits, but there's enough for every kind of evil.

my money: a penny in the stack propping up piece of shit dictators every where i look.

but on top of all this, getting the forms you use to send the money to these fuckers is even harder than parting with it in the first place.

bed for me, fuck this shit.
